Household Hazardous Waste
Program is limited priority given to Tazewell County residents that are disabled, elderly, or in need of immediate removal of household waste. Toll Free Hotline   1-800-449-7587

Paint
If there is a lot of paint in the can, consider first painting an old piece of wood to use up as much product as possible.

  • Latex-based paint - Mix the paint with kitty litter or sand. Let it air dry until it is solid. Tilt the can at a 45-degree angle. If there is no dripping, put the lid on the can and place the can in the garbage toter.
  • Oil-based paint - The City of East Peoria does not accept oil-based paint and it cannot be put in the garbage. Residents who have oil-based paint will have to keep it and wait for an EPA hazardous waste disposal event.

Metal & Hazardous Material
Residents wishing to dispose of metal items should call area scrap metal dealers.  For drop-off locations for hazardous material, call Tazewell County Health Department at 925-5511.

Clothing
The City is asking residents to consider donating any clothing items they may wish to dispose of to Goodwill, Salvation Army or any other organization that will distribute these items to those in need.

Medical Waste
The state of Illinois offers guidelines for disposing of certain medical waste such as syringes.  Please visit the following web sites for additional information:
http://www.epa.state.il.us/land/waste-mgmt/factsheets/general-regs.html

The bureau of Land also gives contact information for other agencies that may regulate syringe disposal:  Illinois Dept of Public healthhttp://www.idph.state.il.us/ (217) 785-2629.

Household Waste Disposal Solutions
There are many items in our homes that residents do not know how to dispose of correctly.  Some are allowed to be disposed of in regular household garbage and others must be disposed of in a manner that will protect the environment.

The Household Waste Chart provides additional guidelines for effective disposal of household waste.

Household Items
Many household items should not be disposed of with regular garbage removal. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency lists many items that are taken at one-day collection events. The collection sites are listed on the following web page: www.epa.state.il.us/land/hazardous-waste/household-haz-waste/hhwc-acceptable.html This will give a list of items that are accepted as well as those that are not accepted.
