Flying Fish Festival & Bow Fishing Tournament

Flying Fish Festival & Bow Fishing Tournament

Ambitious fishermen and women can test their skills at the second annual 2015 Flying Fish Festival & Bow Fishing Tournament.

The tournament includes $7,500 in prize money (first - $2,500; second - $2,000; third - $1,500; fourth - $1,000; fifth - $500) and several raffle contests. The festival will feature educational displays, kids’ activities and Asian Carp samples prepared by local restaurants.

The tournament fee is $120 per boat, which can include up to four people. Registration is available through July 11 Registration on-site will begin at 4 a.m. at Bass Pro Shops.

The money raised from this event will go to support the Union Sportsman Alliance and the Preservation of the Peoria Labor Temple. All fish caught will be converted into natural fertilizer by Schafer Fisheries.

The invasive Asian carp species is detrimental to the Illinois River. The fish, which can weigh up to 110 pounds but are typically about 30 pounds, compete directly with some native species for food. The silver carp variety can leap up to 10 feet out of the water when frightened, posing a threat to humans and property.
