Fall Cleanup Week

FALL CLEANUP WEEK - OCT. 2-6, 2017

The City of East Peoria will conduct its Fall Cleanup Week Oct. 2-6.

This special collection of junk and brush is open only to East Peoria residents whose garbage is picked up by the East Peoria Department of Public Works. The pick up is not for properties zoned commercial, business or multi-family. Additionally, junk may be set out only at residences that are occupied.

Junk cannot be hauled in by non-residents. Anyone who is a non-resident or not eligible for cleanup week who is caught hauling junk to a city residence will be subject to a fine and hauling fees.

Cleanup week items cannot be set out before Saturday, Sept. 30, and must be at the curb no later than 5 a.m. on the regular garbage day.

The maximum pile size can be no larger than 4 feet wide, 4 feet high and 8 feet long, which is approximately the size of the bed of a normal pickup truck. Residents who share a driveway must keep their piles separate at the curb. Often, once combined, the piles exceed the size limit and do not get picked up because Public Works crews have no way to know that more than one household contributed to the pile. Any additional items or brush will be left behind and it will be the owner’s or tenant’s responsibility to remove it.

Junk, garbage and brush must be in separate piles and placed behind the curb in the approximate location of the regular household refuse. Small cleanup week items must be in a toter. A 4-foot separation is necessary between garbage toters and clean-up week items.

If cleanup week items are not picked up on the regular garbage day, they will be collected the next day.

Accepted items: furniture, mattresses, carpet, laminate flooring pieces and other household items, tree limbs and brush. Tree limbs must be stacked with the ends facing the curb and should not be in landscape waste bags. Nothing over 3 inches in diameter or longer than 4 feet will be accepted. Leaves and grass clippings are not included. The brush pile size cannot be larger than 4 feet wide, 4 feet high and 8 feet long, which is approximately the size of the bed of a normal pickup truck. Additional brush not meeting the pile size will be left and it will be the homeowner’s or tenant’s responsibility for proper disposal.

Not accepted items: TVs, computers, small electronics, tires, appliances, water heaters, water softeners, construction and remodeling materials such as shingles, siding, windows, wood, wallboard or tile; railroad ties, landscape waste, and hazardous waste such as paint, pesticides, gasoline and motor oil. In addition, clothing and other small items will not be accepted because they can be included with household trash inside the garbage toter.

Appliances
Residents are being asked to contact TNT Recycling in order to dispose of washers, dryers, etc. correctly. TNT Recycling may be reached at 635-4642.

Electronics
Due to Environmental Protection Agency regulations, electronics must be disposed of by a licensed recycler.
Electronics can be taken to Kuusakoski Recycling, 2022 W. Townline Road, Peoria, phone (309) 691-5015.  They are also accepted by Kuhn Enterprise, (309) 340-2644.

Automotive Batteries
Automotive batteries can be taken to most battery retailers.

Tire Disposal

Tires cannot be set out during clean-up week. East Peoria Tire & Vulcanizing Co., 2801 N. Main St., as well as other tire companies will allow residents to drop off tires for a fee. Tires must be free of water and dirt and off the rim.

Recycling
Containers are available at the Public Works Building located at 2232 E. Washington St.  Each household is allowed two free containers.  If residents desire more than the limit, each container and lid are sold for $14.50 each.

Clothing
The city is asking residents to consider donating any clothing items residents wish to dispose of to Goodwill or Salvation Army, or any other organization that will distribute these items to those in need.
