Street Repairs
Service Request Form

To report street damage call 698-4716. The Department of Public Works will inspect the site to determine the required action to be taken. If minor repairs are required, the Street Department will schedule corrective repairs. If the street needs to be resurfaced or reconstructed, the Department of Public Works will evaluate the street for possible repairs in a future program.

Crews maintain pavement year round. A cut, core and patch method is used during summer months. During winter months a cold patch material is used. Cold patch methods are somewhat temporary in nature.

Street crews also use preventive maintenance methods to prolong the life of existing streets. During summer months, cracks are sealed with hot tar and some streets are seal coated.

How Potholes are Formed

Potholes are a phenomenon of nature. They occur when snow and ice melt. The resulting water then seeps beneath the pavement through cracks caused by traffic. As the temperatures cool to freezing at night, the water becomes ice and expands below the pavement, forcing the pavement to rise. As traffic continues to pound on this raised section of road and the temperatures once again rise above freezing, a shallow divot occurs under the surface and the pavement breaks. Thus, a pothole is formed.

Driveway Inspections

Driveways are inspected by the street department to ensure that they comply with plans and specifications, regulations and ordinances. Residents are required to take out a Driveway Permit at the Public Works Department before performing any work. For more information, call the Public Works Department at 698-4716.

Street Sweeping
Service Request Form

Each spring the Public Works Street Department conducts an annual street sweeping program after the danger of freezing conditions has passed. This program is initiated to clean up the dirt and debris that has accumulated on the city streets over the winter. There is no set schedule for frequency of sweeping residential neighborhoods.

Residents are invited to report unusual problems and locations which may present a hazard to public safety.  These areas will be evaluated and scheduled for sweeping as needed.
