Parade of Lights, parked floats will cause temporary road closures

Portions of city streets will be temporarily closed due to the East Peoria Festival of Lights. The Parade of Lights occurs at 5:45 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18. Springfield Road will be closed to all traffic from its intersection with Taylor Street to North Main Street from 4 p.m. Nov. 18 until 4 p.m. Nov. 20. Access will be open to the CVS Pharmacy and Long John Silver’s/A&W restaurants located at Springfield Road and North Main Street. The closure will be necessary for the parking of Parade of Lights floats in preparation of moving them to the Folepi’s Winter Wonderland drive-through display.

New route for 2017 Parade of Lights

The 2017 Parade of Lights will follow a new route. The parade will occur at 5:45 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, the official start of the 33rd annual East Peoria Festival of Lights. The parade will start at the intersection of East Washington Street and Dolans Lane, where Auto Zone is located. It will continue along its traditional Washington Street route, turning left at the intersection with Camp Street.

Shortly after that, the route will change. The floats will turn right from Washington onto Taylor Street at East Peoria Autobody, and continue along Taylor in front of Central Junior High School, ending at Taylor Street and Springfield Road at the U.S. Post Office.

City observing holiday schedule

All City of East Peoria offices will be closed Thursday and Friday, Nov. 23 and 24, for the Thanksgiving holiday. There will be no garbage and recycling collection on Thursday, Nov. 23. Collection will resume one day behind schedule on Friday, Nov. 24 and end on Saturday, Nov. 25. The City wishes everyone a safe and happy holiday!

City launches improved online utility payment site

Residents now have an additional way to pay city utility bills online through the new MyGovHub website. The site is available on both desktop computers and mobile devices. Through MyGovHub, residents and businesses can check on utility billing account activity; review billing, payment and usage history over the last two years; make online payments using a debit/credit card or electronic check, all at no additional charge; and enroll in paperless billing to be notified via email when the utility bill is due.

Open burning of yard waste allowed through Nov. 30

Because the area has received rain, open burning of yard waste will be allowed in East Peoria through Nov. 30. Those burning yard waste must follow the open burning rules. In addition, at the fire chief's discretion, burning will not be allowed when there are sustained winds or gusts of 10 mph or more. Residents are encouraged to listen to the weather forecast for predicted wind speeds.

Car seat checks set for Dec. 6

Parents can make sure their child's car seat is correctly installed during the East Peoria Fire Department's monthly free car seat check from 1-4 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6. The event will occur at the Central Fire Station, 201 W. Washington St.

Beat the Beep!

The Beat the Beep campaign’s purpose is to alert residents that their CO alarms may be reaching the end of their lifecycles and should be replaced before the beeps indicating end of life. Replacing the alarm will provide residents with continuous protection against possible CO poisoning and reduce the number of false alarms received by the fire department.
