2014 Festival of Lights Brochure
Folepi has been updated for the 30th anniversary!
A new logo featuring the mascot soldier surrounded by a wreath will be the symbol for this year’s festivities, but this soldier looks more toy-like and friendly than its predecessor.
“We think that kids will like this Folepi soldier better, and the updated logo fits with one of our goals of appealing to families and children,” said Doug McCarty, City of East Peoria director of Special Events and Tourism. “The original logo served us well for 29 years, and we decided our 30th anniversary is a great time to roll out an updated version.”
Plans for the 30th anniversary have been in the works for months, and include more lighted displays in The Levee District downtown area in addition to the traditional Parade of Lights and Folepi’s Winter Wonderland drive-through display.
Folepi’s Enchanted Forest is returning to the festival after many years, located outside of the Civic Plaza in The Levee District. McCarty said plans are still being finalized, but the walk-through forest will include the festival’s 35-foot lighted Christmas tree, lighted displays, real trees illuminated with lights and some of the Parade of Lights floats. Admission will be free.
The lighted wreath on the Fondulac Drive hill has also updated. Instead of using a Ferris wheel which must be erected with a rented crane, a new wreath is has been constructed. The wreath is a large flat piece with sides that fold in for ease in moving and storing the display. Illuminated entirely with LED lights, the candle in the center of the wreath has three flames which flicker, and the candlestick and bow are made of a grid filled in with lights. McCarty said the wreath is on a timer, turned off during the day and then coming on at a preset time each evening.
Marking 30 years of holiday cheer, the festival begins with the Parade of Lights and continues through the month of December with the Folepi's Winter Wonderland drive-through display.
The Festival's mascot is the wooden soldier Folepi, whose name serves as an acronym for "Festival of Lights, East Peoria, Illinois."
