Resident Services
Are You Experiencing Sewer Problems?
If you are experiencing sewer problems such as slow drains or backups, call the Public Works Department at 309-698-4716. For after-hour emergencies, call the East Peoria Police non-emergency number at 309-698-4700. The City will dispatch the sewer maintenance personnel to determine if the problem is in the home's service lateral or the City's sanitary sewer main.
This service is provided to all City residents free of charge and may save you the expense of calling a contractor or plumber if the problem exists in the main line. If the personnel determine that the main line is clear, you will be advised to contact a plumber or contractor. The Public Works Department does have a list of plumbers and sewer contractors (PDF) that are licensed to do repair work in the City of East Peoria. The City can not recommend any plumbers or contractors.
Common Issues
Common causes for backups include:
- Blockages that are caused by misuse from products or objects being flushed down the drain that should not be
- Tree roots that entered the sewer service or lateral pipe through a joint or broken pipe
Sewer Odor
If you experience sewer odor in your home, you may have a drain trap in the house which has evaporated the water seal. This occurs in the lower level of a home in the floor drains which are not used very often. Pouring a few cups of water in the drain should correct the problem.
If you notice a sound when flushing your toilet, it may be a sign of a blocked vent stack. In this case you will need to remove the blockage by running water down the stack to dislodge the object.
